Andrew Kula - Next stop...Washington DC!
VFW #5819 Voice of Democracy entrant Andrew Kula is pictured with VOD Chairman Paul Krisciunas and Ted Dziubek. Andrew was first selected as the winner at the Post 5819, then as the winner of the 19th District. That allowed him to advance to the state level which he also won! Next, he will compete at the national level in Washington DC for a $35,000 scholarship. The VOD contest provides annual themes to promote democracy and Americanism. All submissions are judged on originality, content and delivery. Andrew, a Lemont High School senior, presented his audio-essay at the awards dinner to a standing ovation.

Avery Devoy - Patriot's Pen Essay Winner
Ms Avery Devoy was selected as the Post #5819 Patriots Pen winner and received third place award at the 19th District awards banquet on 7 January in Villa Park. The Patriots Pen is an essay program for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders whose annual topics encourage reflection on the interaction between veterans and US history. Avery’s essay was selected from over 130 entries this year. She is pictured above with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Devoy. Congratulations, Avery.

Andrew Kula receives Citation of Appreciation
Commander Robert Rose presented a Citation of Appreciation to Andrew Kula, a Senior at Lemont High School. Andrew called the VFW and volunteered to place flags on the graves of veterans for Memorial Day. He and his group placed them on the Sunday before Memorial Day and removed them the day after per the cemetery requirements.
The post supplied the flags that were donated by the Ace Hardware Corporation.
